Aim
In SIM, those who are considering a commitment of two years and longer are what we call "long-termers". Making a commitment to serve overseas for longer assignments offers an amazing opportunity to learn a new language and begin the process of learning how another culture functions and how Christ’s message can be taken to a new context. It opens all sorts of relationships in which God can use us to make a real difference for the Kingdom of God.

Structure
Long-termers follow a well-defined application process that involves discussion with your home church. The speed with which you complete your application depends upon you. Once we have made the decision together to proceed with your application, considerable effort will be made by the SIM office to ensure that you are equipped and suitably matched to a genuine opportunity for effective cross-cultural ministry. Assignments are usually for 3 or 4 years to allow time to adapt to your new country and community.

Long-term missionaries are required to raise a team of people who will be their prayer partners and financial supporters. Orientation is provided by SIM through orientation days to ensure that you become well-equipped to live and minister cross culturally. It is quite a journey from the time you decide to respond to God's calling upon your life to actually arriving on the mission field. SIM New Zealand is committed to walking with you during this process.
