The concept of Christian medical electives is where the physical healing is administered hand in hand with spiritual healing in a holistic approach. Medical electives provide an eye-opening, hands-on experience where you can develop your medical skills and compassion for those in physical and spiritual need.
There are many reasons why you should consider an overseas medical elective:
- To see medical conditions that you won’t find in New Zealand and to gain more “hands on” experience
- To see local health problems from a different perspective and to gain a global view of healthcare
- To experience medical work in a Christian setting
To grow in your service and love for Christ and to “test the water” for future overseas Christian service
Where can I do a medical elective?

- Angola

The Work
Medical work in a mission hospital is very demanding for all concerned. Healthcare in most countries SIM is involved in operates under considerable financial constraints and with very limited resources. Students should not expect to find a learning environment similar to the kind in developed countries. As a result we are seeking those who are mature, willing to work hard, flexible enough to accept interruptions and changes and to do menial tasks without being offended or frustrated.
Overall you will get out of your elective what you put into it. If you go expecting a great challenge and are keen to make the most of the opportunity to learn and serve in a new culture, then it could be a life-changing experience.
SIM New Zealand only takes medical students from New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
